So many of you DM me and reach out to talk about your own personal mental health struggles. The same goes for a lot of my friends in real life who are just looking for some honest advice. Trust me, I’ve been there. I’ve felt moments of helplessness and have reached out for a shoulder to lean on when I can’t find the answers myself. Sometimes I do so with friends and loved ones, and other times I turn to a professional. You know, I’ve been open about my own anxiety and depression and how therapy and self-help rituals have helped me along the way.
It can literally feel like you’re being weighed down and you have no idea how to get rid of that pressure and move forward. Anxiety and depression can truly feel like a trap. There’s a misconception that you can’t help people who don’t want to be helped, and I don’t like that approach at all. What if someone is so lost they don’t even know how to start? Or what if they simply don’t have the energy to embark on this journey of self-help? It’s not fair to think that people don’t want to get better, especially when we’re not able to understand everyone’s situation and struggles.
Yes, it requires work, but sometimes you need a clearer path on how to get started on even doing the work. Getting rid of these deteriorating feelings and claiming your power back isn’t something that happens overnight. Trust me, if you ask for a helping hand you can find yourself thinking why didn’t I do this sooner?
And that’s not to say you should beat yourself up for struggling to find the words or even struggling to get out of bed in the morning. Those days happen and that’s okay. But I do think that sometimes it takes reaching your lowest point in order to see the light and understand how to make the best changes for you. I still have my moments of feeling incredibly anxious, but it took years of questions, research, and therapy in order to manage those feelings in a healthier way today. Every day is one day closer to feeling like your happiest and healthiest self.
I know that everyone’s mental health journey is different, and if you’re looking for ways to practice self-help, it’s important to have an honest conversation with yourself. I hope you find comfort in knowing that more people feel this way than you can ever imagine. Reach out to your loved ones, have an open dialogue, and research options for professional help, if that’s what you feel, is the best route for you. Take it one day at a time and I promise you’ll be so proud of yourself as time passes.
Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite self-help books that led me down the path of working on my mental health. I hope this can help you too!
