Black-Owned Beauty Brands to Shop From Now and Always

02.01.2021 — The Frenshe Editors

Every day presents a new opportunity to lift melanated voices. One place to start is by putting your money where your mouth is, and supporting Black-owned businesses. Black-owned beauty brands are shifting the narrative with products that are more inclusive, diverse, and specifically address the needs of different ethnicities.

Black consumers hold a buying power that’s now over $1 trillion, yet they’ve been overlooked through makeup shade ranges, hair concerns, and a lack of culturally-competent spokespeople. As we kick off Black History Month, we wanted to share some of our favorite Black-owned beauty brands to support today, tomorrow, and always. This is just the start, and we encourage you to continuously research and buy from Black-owned brands.

Ashley is a big fan of Beneath Your Mask’s Heal Whipped Skin Soufflé—a luxurious blend formulated to hydrate and strengthen the skin. The brand quickly sells out, so if you want to try other products like the Indulge Total Body Elixir and Remedy Conditioning Lip Balm, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for a restock.

Bread Beauty Supply

Consider Bread Beauty Supply a curly-haired girl’s dream. With products dedicated to wash day and long-term hair health (plus some cute accessories to match), there’s something for everyone’s curls and coils.

Are you a face mask lover? If so, Agestral is definitely for you. From clay masks to overnight jelly masks, jade rollers, and body care, Astegral’s got it all. But, if we had to choose one product to try first it’s definitely the Illuminate Turmeric Face Mask.

Melanin Haircare

Simple, natural haircare is exactly how Melanin describes itself. We’ll have to say we absolutely agree! You get both wash day and styling essentials, along with headwraps for protecting your scalp and strands. Plus, the African black soap in its shampoo is a totally gamechanger.

Propa Beauty

Nude shades are not universal, and Propa Beauty’s setting out to make that clear. The line features nude lipsticks designed specifically for darker skin tones, a product that a lot of others tend to miss the mark with. Pucker up.

If you’re in need of products for stressed out hair and skin, then you’re in luck. Frigg’s unique take on traditional beauty brings plant-powered potions to the forefront. The products are designed to treat the (literal) burnout that our skin and hair can experience. Fans have even credited the hair potion for quick hair growth.

Nola Skinsentials

Nola Skinsentials is a small business full of products made with your skin health in mind. One thing that fans love about the brand is the opportunity to try a sample-sized version of each product before diving in to buy a full size. This makes finding the right products so much easier.

Men deserve great skincare too! Ceylon was made with men of color in mind, along with their specific skincare needs. Founder, Patrick Boateng II, found that most men’s products wouldn’t work for those with melanin in their skin or with different ethnic backgrounds. Try Ceylon’s cleanser, toner, or moisturizer today.

The small batches are what makes Anita Grant products so special. You can shop by curl density and porosity, and for skincare made to treat eczema, scars, and more. And for all of those self-care days, there’s milk baths and body oils too!

Lauren Napier Beauty

The type of cleansing wipes you use matters! Lauren Napier set out to put a luxurious spin on the everyday makeup wipe and expanded well beyond it. The wipes are available in formulas for oily and blemish-prone skin, normal-to-sensitive skin, and dull skin.

Hill + Daniel

Okay, so home fragrance isn’t technically beauty, but we’re giving it a pass. Oh, and did we mention the products non-toxic? Yes, safe fragrances to make our space smell amazing.
