This summer the two words that immediately come to mind are ‘normal’ and ‘outside‘, and who can blame us? We all want to enjoy this summer more than even our best one yet! But, how do we step into this side of ‘normal’ life and enjoy ourselves? Well, it all starts with disconnecting from the noise. Ahead, we’re sharing six ways to get the most out of your summer, because you (and the rest of us) truly deserve it.
We know it’s hard, but it’s okay to put your phone down. It’s also totally fine to take a break from emails, Slack messages, Zoom calls—you name it. A digital detox, no matter how big or small, is good for your mental health. In fact, one study concluded that people who use social media occasionally are almost three times less likely to experience depression when compared to avid users. Plus, how can you really enjoy summer if you’re glued to your screens all of the time?
You’ve heard it a million times before, but it’s a fact that physical activity releases endorphins. This doesn’t mean that to enjoy your summer you need to roll out your yoga mat, but you can get active at the beach, on a hike, on the tennis court, etc. Think of some fun outdoor activities that’ll get you moving. We promise you won’t regret it. This leads us to our next point…
Summer is all about being outside, and after the past year, this is especially true. After being cooped up at home, take some time to connect with nature whether it be by the water, a local park, or even somewhere you’ve never been before. It’s good for the soul. Gregory Bratman, Ph.D., notes that “contact with nature is associated with increases in happiness, subjective well-being, positive affect, positive social interactions and a sense of meaning and purpose in life, as well as decreases in mental distress.”
If you haven’t already been spending time with your close friends and loved ones, now’s the time. Ditch the social media and get social IRL, just like old times. Gather your crew and make some plans this summer to remind you why these relationships are so special in the first place.
Pick up a tennis racket, take a cooking class, attend a wine tasting—the options are endless. Why not try something new this summer? If there’s one thing we’ve all learned since 2020 it’s that we never know what’s in store for us, so we might as well take risks. Try something new and exciting to check off your bucket list.
If your idea of the perfect summer is sitting back and relaxing, then do just that. Find your zen and try some guided meditations, yoga, or whatever your ideal version of catching up on rest is. Sometimes the plan is to slow down! The world is so fast-paced anyway.
