Vitamins and supplements are an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle—but at what cost? It feels like we’re introduced to new health and wellness-focused brands everyday, and the options are getting harder and harder to choose from. Sure, it’s tempting to gravitate towards a supplement powder with beautiful packaging, but it’ what’s inside that really matters. It’s vital that you add high-quality supplements to your daily routine. So, how do you actively choose supplements that are actually good for you? We spoke to Risa Groux, CN to find out. Frenshe: Why is it important for us to add supplements to our daily routine?
Risa Groux: Unfortunately, modern conventional farming has depleted our soils of essential nutrients by 50% since the 1940s. Therefore it’s a necessity to supplement with quality nutrients that we no longer get from food. It primarily affects our calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C but most vitamins and minerals have been depleted. In addition, good-quality supplements are made from high-quality food and herbs that help detoxify, heal, and sustain the body, increase immunity, and supporting disease prevention.
F: What are some supplements you recommend that adult women take every day and why?
RG: I take a functional nutrition approach with each person I work with, which means I do comprehensive blood and stool testing to determine the road map to find the root causes for each person. Once I know the landscape, I customize supplements for that person. I recommend for everyone is my D3 Ultra with vitamin K as we have a D receptor site in every cell in the body.
Still, it is also imperative for immunity, gut, heart, brain, thyroid health, and support for anti-aging, cancer prevention, and making bones. My B Ultra is critical for RNA, DNA, and feeding the intestinal lining. A prevalent gene mutation called MTHFR prevents B12 and/or Folate (B9) from being methylated in the body. Hence, it needs to be in a methylated form so the body can absorb it. For anyone over 45 or experiencing any bloating, heartburn, or acid reflux, I recommend my digestive enzyme, Enzyme Max. F: How does one know if a supplement is safe, to begin with?
RG: I recommend reading labels to start! So many mainstream popular brands are filled with rancid, processed oils that cause inflammation, such as soybean oil and vegetable oil. Many supplements contain artificial colors and dyes, which is impressive that that is even legal! Others have sugar or artificial sweeteners, so you must read the ingredients! I recommend getting supplements through a functional practitioner who usually carries supplements that are top quality and tested.
Buying them at a health food store can be good, but many places will carry brands that are not as clean, so always best to check. I am committed to producing the highest quality, purity, potency using efficacious nutrients. I look to scientific research before creating any RGN products to ensure an effective and safe product.
