How to Tell the Difference Between Fear & Intuition

I’ve always been very intuitive. My intuition is what has guided me in my career and in life! However, I’m also an anxious person, and sometimes fear can creep up because of that. I recently had a work meeting I needed to attend to but felt like red flags were popping up everywhere trying to figure out the safest way to get there. I started listening to the little voice of fear, and it was guiding my decision. However, I didn’t feel great about that decision. I was scared that I was letting fear hold me back. 

Being quarantined at home made me realize that I was getting a bit too comfortable, and it was time to get back out there. I couldn’t just stay inside all the time and needed to do some work outside of myself—safely, of course. I guess you could say I had some lingering trauma from the past year and a half. That’s when my intuition told me that I had to get to this meeting—not because it was necessary, but because it was crucial to my mental health and wellbeing. The only way to get over fear is to face fear. In the end, I’m so glad I did. It was like I felt a part of me that I hadn’t felt in a really long time. Being a new mom and living in a global pandemic, I missed attending in-person meetings, and it was such a thrill! Here are some easy steps to distinguish fear from intuition.

  1. Meditate on it. Ask yourself, “how am I feeling right now?”
  2. Look at all of your options, and look at them closely.
  3. Discuss your feelings with a friend or partner and see if they have a different perspective.
  4. Sit with your decision. Do you feel good about it? If so, that’s the right one. If you’re having second thoughts, that usually means there might be fear involved!
