The Ritual Diaries is a series about how our favorite creators, experts, and change-makers take care of themselves in a busy world. This week, tennis phenom Sloane Stephens reveals the MVPs of her self-care rituals.
What is the first thing you do in the morning?
I always try to take time for myself in the morning before I get going, but to be honest, I check my phone for notifications almost immediately. Once I get going, I start out with a big glass of water first thing — it’s a small ritual that gets me started on the right track. I always follow with my go-to skincare routine – I’m a skincare junkie!
How has your upbringing and environment shaped your understanding of wellness?
I’ve always been taught the importance of self-care. My grandparents taught so much about wellness both in terms of health and also in terms of caring for your emotional well-being. The importance of balance is key and making sure to take time for yourself.
What makes you feel your best?
When I’m at home enjoying time with my family. Since I’m on the road so often for my job, I really cherish those simple and quiet moments at home.
What has been the hardest part of your wellness journey—and how do you overcome it?
Trying to figure out what’s best for me and stay consistent with those things while always being in an inconsistent environment — different countries, different hotels, etc.
What is something you would like to see more of in the wellness world?
Accessibility. I feel like the wellness market is really fragmented, at least in my own experience. It takes a lot of research and effort to find different spas, treatments, providers and products that work for you, and I’d like to continue to see information and routines shared and debunked so more people can find the things that work for them.
What is a ‘must-have’ product in your routine?
Dr. Barbara Sturm Anti Pollution Drops.
How do you define ‘healthy’?
Spending time with people you love, living an active lifestyle, and having moments for yourself.
What is something you look forward to every day?
My wellness routine. I’m constantly training or playing a match and there is nothing better than coming home to a warm bath and some alone time. I’ve always prioritized my beauty and wellness routine because it makes me feel my best. I put so much strain on my body everyday that it’s nice to be able to give it a break.
How do you reset yourself after a bad moment?
Spend time with my family and get back into the things that make me feel good.
What is a ritual that brings you joy?
My nighttime routine! I have such an active, on-the-go lifestyle, not to mention being frequently jetlagged, so I needed to develop a routine that signaled to my body and mind that it is time to start winding down and prepare for a restful sleep.
What is the last thing you do at night?
My nighttime skin care routine. No matter how long of a day I’ve had, I always make sure to wash my face and put on my go to products. I’m a sucker for a good mask and these days I love the Fresh Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask. I find it really helps with dry skin from traveling.
